So much for that. Jennifer Lopez has abruptly canceled her New Year’s Eve hosting gig at E11EVEN Miami. This, straight off the news that her ex hub Marc Anthony has split up with his wife. Not that the two are related. In fact, no reason was given, other than the cancellation was ‘personal.’ Says an E11EVEN spox, “Due to personal reasons, Jennifer Lopez has cancelled her appearance on New Year’s Eve. We look forward to welcoming her in the future.”
If your Big Buford isn’t big enough, talk to The Boss. Rick Ross, along with his sister Tawanda, just bought his fave restaurant, Checkers in Miami Gardens.
“We’re incredibly excited to have Rick Ross and his sister Tawanda join our system. His authentic love of the Checkers brand and his desire to give back to his community, are passions that we, as a company, share. We look forward to many years of partnership and business success with Rick and his family.” said Scott Wakeman, Senior Marketing Director at Checkers.
Ross cites the Checkers at 2645 NW 183rd St in Miami Gardens as one of his favorite hometown hangouts and has vibrant memories from the eatery, beginning with his teenage years (the restaurant at this location first opened for business in December, 1989).
“As a rap superstar and business mogul, I am excited to embark on this new partnership with Checkers. I grew up eating checkers in my neighborhood so it brings me great pride to be able to represent the brand and help keep the culture alive. More importantly, I am happy to be able to create jobs and give back to the Carol City community – a community that has been a continuous inspiration in my life and helped mold me into the boss that I am today.”
This is not Ross’s first rodeo. He has previously invested in Belaire champagne and Wing Stop restaurants.
Ross couldn’t wait to bring the partnership to life, and shot a video (password Checkers), all about it.
So, while y’all get fat, Ross’s wallet will get fatter. And hopefully that’s all that gets bigger. Ross lost 75 pounds after changing his diet and exercise. According to an interview in Men’s Health magazine, Ross explains how Checker’s fits into that diet, saying, he allows himself the fast food, but only between noon and 5 p.m. and only two or three days a week.
Miami’s randiest 24/7 hot spot E11EVEN is where JLo has decided to be for New Year’s Eve. Not being billed as a performance per se, the party will feature La Lopez conducting a champagne toast at midnight and, from what we hear, doing a few numbers of her own. Guest DJ IRIE will man the decks and expect special cameo appearances by some of Lopez’s celeb friends and or potential suitors. Advanced tickets are $300 per person, the going rate for most NYE hoe downs, and includes open bar with passed hors d’oeuvres from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. plus that champagne toast at midnight. Full disclosure by The Club: “Ticket pricing is scheduled to increase as the event draws closer.” So you know what means. Run, don’t walk to www.11miami.com/nye or call 305-829-2911.
We had his crafty cohort down here for Art Basel and now, Snoop Dogg is heading south as his alter ego, DJ Snoopadelic, for a one night only spin sesh, Friday,December 16 at the newly opened hot spot ORA. While there is no cover charge, entrance is solely at the discretion of the doorman, so good luck with that. Or, you can try making a legit reservation on its website and hope that works too.
Following the official jersey retirement ceremony at the LA Lakers v. Miami Heat game on Thursday, December 22, Shaquille O’Neal will celebrate the end of #32 with a big bash at Miami’s randiest nightclub, E11even with an open to the public event featuring The Heat’s official spin doctor, DJ Irie, taking over the sound system. Shaq’s jersey will be the third team member jersey ever to be retired by the Miami Heat, following Tim Hardaway’s and Alonzo Mourning’s.
A $35 for men, $23 for women ticket (that disparity is ok with us), you can get in and , we’re told, experience “an epic night filled with stars, VIP athletes and their A-List network of friends.” Doors open at 11 p.m. but the party won’t stop until early morning (when the real, uh, entertainment happens). For tickets, click here and for VIP tables, email Tables@11Miami.com.
The opening of a new strip mall in Boca Raton or any bucolic bubble of the ‘burbs is, to quote the great Vice President Joseph Biden, “a big, fuckin’ deal.” No sarcasm font. It really is. Which is why the grand opening of the brand new one at 5560 Military Trail in Del Boca Vista is breaking news. To commemorate this bigness, one tenant, the Habit Burger Grill, is giving away free hamburgers in advance of their 10:30 a.m. opening on Wednesday, December 21.
Come straight from Flywheel, from Barre, from your couch in your finest Lululemon wear from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 15 and Friday December 16 when the first 200 people will get a free Charburger, fries and regular drink. Can’t make that one because you’re too busy mortgaging your second home from frequent visits to Raw Juice? Fret not. From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, December 18 and Monday December 19, the first 200 will get a free “Chargrilled Meal” from one of the restaurant’s pre-set menus.
Courtney Love, who did a little Art Baseling and has expressed a penchant for fine Miami dining at places like Upland and Alter, took some time off from her Kansas City Choir Boy show Thursday to kick back with friends at the recently opened Ricky’s on South Beach for their weekly Thursday live rock music night. Love, wearing a black, gold, and blue metallic floral patterned dress and glittery eye makeup, showed up to the kitschy 80s-inspired bar/restaurant with a few friends around midnight, settling into a table where she was seen smoking and enjoying the live music for about an hour. The 52-year-old godmother of grunge was, to some onlookers’ dismay, pretty mellow and, well, mature. No ass implants or twerking from her–yet. Stay tuned.
